Kiki Cuyler hit for the cycle as the Pirates destroyed Philadelphia, 16-3. The game began a 15-game homestand at Forbes Field, with the first three against the Phillies.
The Bucs hit for a cycle of their own, after a fashion. They scored one run in the first, two in the second, three in the third and four in the fourth.
Cuyler got things started with two outs in the bottom of the first, lining a ball over second and racing around for an inside-the-park home run. It was his fourth home run of the season.
In the second, Carson Bigbee, spelling Clyde Barnhrt in left, and George Grantham led off with singles. Both scored on a double by Earl Smith.
In the third, a walk, an error and a sacrifice put runners at second and third. Both came all the way around on a wild pitch. A double by Bigbee finished Phillies’ starter Jack Knight. Bigbee got to third on an infield hit and scored on a ground out.
The four, fourth-inning runs came on one play. The Bucs loaded the bases on two walks and a single. Traynor dropped a double down the right field line to drive in three runs, then scored himself when right fielder Cy Williams threw the ball away.
The Phillies couldn’t counter with nearly enough against Specs Meadows. They got single runs in the third, fifth and seventh. Williams drove in one with a single in the third, then another with a bases-loaded walk in the fifth. In the seventh, first baseman Chicken Hawks singled in a run. Meadows finished out the game, allowing ten hits and striking out seven.
The Pirates kept on scoring. In the bottom of the sixth, Cuyler singled, stole second and came home on a single by Bigbee. A triple by Grantham brought in another run.
In the seventh, Meadows started the inning with a single. A walk and a single by Eddie Moore brought him home, then Cuyler tripled for two more. He scored on a single by Traynor to produce the 16-3 final count.
At that point, Cuyler had a single, triple and home run. He came to bat one last time in the bottom of the eighth with two out and doubled to complete the cycle.
Cuyler finished with four runs and three RBIs. Bigbee had three hits and three runs, while Grantham had three hits and Smith had three RBIs. Meadows improved his record to 7-2.
