October 6, 1979: Pirates to Face Baltimore Orioles in the World Series

A day after clinching their own trip to the World Series, the Pirates found out their opponent would be a familiar one:  the Baltimore Orioles.  The O’s clinched their own berth with an 8-0 win over the California Angels, giving them the AL Championship Series, three games to one.

This will be a rematch of the Pirates’ last appearance in the Series, which came in 1971.  In that one, widely known as the Clemente Series, the Bucs fell behind, two games to none.  They came storming back to win in seven games.

Both teams will have time to rest.  The Series begins on October 9 in Baltimore.
