By Wilbur Miller

The first-place Pirates have an off-day as they head into Chicago for three games against the Cubs.  The Expos and Cubs are also off.  The Pirates lead Montreal by half a game and third-place Chicago by four and a half.  The Phillies have faded to eight games behind and the Cards to eight and a half.

The NL West is strictly a two-team race.  Houston leads the Reds by four and a half games.

The Pirates’ starters in Chicago will be Jim Rooker (2-5, 3.86 ERA), Jim Bibby (8-2, 2.69), and John Candelaria (10-7, 3.47).  The Cubs will send out Rick Reuschel (10-7, 3.88), Lynn McGlothen (9-8, 4.44) and Dennis Lamp (7-7, 4.41).
